This book is a mediocre version of Guardians of the Galaxy written for an early high school/middle school audience. Danielle Banas delivers a medium length, reasonably exciting book about Cora Saros, a largely ineffective criminal. Captured during a heist, she is sent to intergalactic prison. While there, she and her cellmates form a tenuous alliance and together plot their escape. Soon after, they’re given the opportunity for freedom and riches if they can acquire a legendary artifact for the prison warden. Their adventures attempting to recover the object make up most of the book. The characters have relatively little depth and stereotypical backstories. Character motivations are also weak, the antagonist especially seems to oscillate between sadism and greed, often at the cost of reason. The main plot is driven mainly by contrivance and convenience, though it’s premise functions. The jokes are only funny occasionally, though some are adequate. Overall the book is a generic story that suffers from weak plotting and lackluster characters, setting, and themes. I wouldn’t recommend this (especially if you have a basic understanding of astronomy), but highly recommend Ender’s Game or Starship Troopers if you need to scratch the sci-fi itch.
