Twas seven years ago today
That I had packed my stuff
My things I’d stowed for Boy Scout Camp
I hoped they were enough

For Goshen Scout Camp is a place
Deep in Virginia hills
Where ancient mountains towered huge
And still cell service kill

Lake Merriweather’s surface green
Is that camp’s beating heart
And on its shore lie camping homes
Quite distant from Walmart

In tents of green with wooden frames
Are where the scouts will sleep
And those are where mem’ries are made
Which scouts will ever keep

In campfires and dining halls
They’re bonding over food
And since the boys are fellow lads
The jokes are rather crude

And safety is a second thought
Subservient to cool
For boy scouts keep a dream alive
The right to be a fool\

So while the gun range is quite safe
And lifeguards watch the lake
The firepits unsupervized
Are a place for mistakes

A lighter and a can of deet
Create a massive flame
But if you’re not real careful there
Your face won’t be the same

All this and more I learned at camp
But this the question begs
Above all else, what did I learn?
Don’t ever eat camp eggs!
