Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
Without a righteous deed
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
We will declare our need

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
Marked with the last year’s palms
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
We go to time of alms

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
In a new image cast
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
We now begin the fast

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
Remember tempted Lord
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
And listen to His word

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
For forty days we wait
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
To see the Savior’s fate

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
To hear his final breath
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
Bear witness to his death

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
In midst of all that strife
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust
He’s raised back up to life

I wanted to try something a bit unique today and took some inspiration from repetitions in the morning prayer canticle and the end of Psalm 103. It turned out alright. Originally, I thought I’d end this poem by breaking the pattern with the second-to-last line, but I ended up deciding that maintaining the same structure throughout was the better option. Welcome to Lent my friends.
