A range of topics filled my days
And homework filled the nights
I thought about the day I’d had
And then turn out the lights
I’d wake up early, go to work
Talk with the silly kids
Then they’d do something stupid and
Sometimes I’d blow my lid
They had a movie to observe
And notes the had to write
They told me they could see it best
If I turned out the light
I turned around and flipped the switch
And then I turned around
I looked across the their empty desks
Kids nowhere to be found
I gave a start, the students cheek
But now I’d have my fun
I found them hiding in the room
And then their play was done
But meanwhile I would write my note
And name the truant kids
Who thought it would be funny if
They from the teacher hid
Though now I’m here in Washington
Wearing my formal suit
Those days I still will hold as dear
When I was substitute
