I finally finished learning the rest of morse code today, just in time to learn that you no longer need to learn it to get an amateur radio license. I’m a bit upset by this news, not so much because I’m upset that I now know morse, but because I was told that you needed to know it to get one back when I was a Boy Scout earning my radio merit badge which led to my never getting one (as of yet).
Next they’re going to tell me that you don’t need to know how to operate a car to get a driver’s license. Wait…
That’s true! (but only in Maryland)
Bonus story: I was trying to figure out if knowing morse was a requirement and stumbled across this article, FCC to reinstate Morse Code test, from 2014. It was only until I had chased down several more sources confirming there was no such test that I discovered the publication date of that article was April 1st. Not sure if I’m happy or sad about that tbh.
