Driving back from the hike we came up to a bridge across a river. For just a split second, you could see the pillars of concrete jutting out of the still water, an angle of road striking back against the sky. The mountains framing man’s frail attempt at altitude, looking back, retired from their reign as the tallest peaks on the continent, smiling indulgently at the new kids on the block. And then the moment was gone.
(The view of the sunset from the bridge was also stunning.)
