The Double Gloucester ribboned up
Descends each fateful year
Down Cooper’s hill in Gloucestershire
But do not, ye, have fear

For noble souls descend with it
To catch it ere it breaks
Upon the crowd of spectators
And shatters into flakes

They’re running down the great incline
Some faster and some slow
Some are awake and conscious but
One’s knocked out down below

Chris Anderson is running too
And he’s leading the pack
Though cheddar all he wants to eat
He won’t gloucester lack

What you won’t see are ambuli
It’s unofficial now
But what counts isn’t government
It’s people going, WOW

Many thanks to the game Cheese Rolling and my good friend Larsen for suggesting we play it after discovering that Steam Play Together is laggy - play it for yourself here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3809440/Cheese_Rolling/

And do yourself a favor and click the links in the poem. My personal favorite quote in there is:

Anderson believes that the secret to winning the cheese rolling is to stay on your feet and not fall over. However, footage of him winning the cheese rolling for a record 21st time reveals that he does in fact fall over, but has a particular talent for getting up swiftly, propelling himself down the hill in a single seamless movement while fallers behind roll multiple times before coming to a stop.
